Kenya safaris

Kenya is where we are based. Our office, vehicles and most of our guides are in Nairobi, so this is the country we know best.

Kenya
Why Kenya

A wide range of parks and wildlife in one country.

Kenya packs the classic safari into a small, drivable country. In one week you can go from the open grasslands of the Maasai Mara, to elephants wandering below Kilimanjaro at Amboseli, to the red-earth country of Tsavo, to the northern specials (reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra) that only Samburu and Laikipia hold.

Then there’s the migration. From roughly July to October the wildebeest herd crosses into the Mara from the Serengeti, and the river crossings are the single most-watched wildlife event on earth. We time itineraries around it without ever promising a crossing. Anyone who does is guessing.

Kenya is also the easiest country in the region to travel in: most parks are 3–6 hours from Nairobi by road, many have scheduled flights, and the infrastructure means your itinerary can change course mid-trip without drama.

The parks

Parks and areas we visit in Kenya

Maasai Mara National Reserve
The great stage

Maasai Mara National Reserve

The reason most people come to Kenya. Rolling grassland with one of the highest lion densities in Africa, and the July–October stage of the wildebeest migration.

Best: Jun–Oct · 4–5 hrs from Nairobi by road
Amboseli National Park
Elephants & ice

Amboseli National Park

Big elephant families on open plains with Kilimanjaro towering behind them. The most photographed view in East Africa, and deservedly so.

Best: Jun–Oct, Dec–Feb · 4 hrs from Nairobi
Samburu & Laikipia
The north

Samburu & Laikipia

Drier, wilder and quieter. Samburu’s riverine forests hold northern species rarely seen in Kenya’s southern parks, and Laikipia’s conservancies run some of the best community wildlife land in Africa.

Best: Jun–Sep, Dec–Feb · 5–6 hrs from Nairobi
Tsavo & the South Coast
Red dust & beaches

Tsavo & the South Coast

Kenya’s largest park: the dust-red elephants of Tsavo East, the springs and viewpoints of Tsavo West, and Diani’s white-sand coast to finish.

Best: Jun–Oct · 4–6 hrs from Nairobi
Lake Nakuru
Flamingos & rhino

Lake Nakuru

A soda lake that turns pink with flamingos, a fenced rhino sanctuary with both black and white rhino, and one of the easiest park drives in the country.

Best: Year-round · 2.5 hrs from Nairobi
Nairobi National Park
The city park

Nairobi National Park

The only national park inside a capital city. Twenty minutes from our office, with lions and rhino against a skyline. A perfect first or last day.

Best: Year-round · 30 min from Nairobi
