14-Day East Africa Perennial Safari

Two countries and six of East Africa's storied camps, joined mostly by light aircraft so the days belong to the ground, not the transfer between it.

Duration14 days13 nights

Trip overview

A fourteen-day circuit built around six camps rather than a single route: Samburu’s red north, the grass plains of the Maasai Mara, the quiet southern Serengeti, the crater floor at Ngorongoro and the baobab country of Tarangire. Flights link the Kenyan legs and the crossing into Tanzania; the final three parks are joined by road.

The pace favours depth over distance. Two full days are set aside in both the Mara and the Serengeti, and the crater at Ngorongoro is visited twice, once at first light. Nothing on this route is rushed to make room for the next.

Arrival in Nairobi

After the long flight, a private transfer is waiting at Jomo Kenyatta International, and the drive continues to the hotel. The rest of the day asks nothing at all: time to rest, adjust to the altitude and the hour, and sleep well before the flight north. Dinner is arranged independently.

Nairobi to Samburu

Nairobi to Samburu

The morning starts at Wilson Airport, Nairobi's small airfield for bush flights, and the short flight north crosses the equator with Mount Kenya often visible off the wing. Below, the green highlands turn to the red earth and doum palms of Samburu, country that belongs to the north alone, and so does its wildlife: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, and the long necked gerenuk, which feeds standing upright on its hind legs.

Lunch is taken on arrival. The first game drive follows as the afternoon light turns gold, along the Ewaso Ng'iro River, where elephant come down to drink.

Samburu

Full Day in Samburu

Samburu rewards patience more than distance, so the day is shaped around its two best windows: the drive at dawn, while the air is cool and the predators are active, and the drive late in the day, when the heat breaks and the river fills with animals again. The hours in between belong to the camp.

The reserve is home to species that live only in Kenya's dry north, the so-called Samburu Special Five among them: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, beisa oryx and gerenuk. Leopard are seen here more often than most people expect.

Samburu to the Maasai Mara

Samburu to the Maasai Mara

Another short flight, this one south, trades Samburu's ochre plains for the deep grass of the Maasai Mara, and the difference is obvious from the air long before landing. Arrival comes in time for lunch at camp.

The first game drive follows in the afternoon, onto plains carrying one of the highest concentrations of predators in Africa. On the Mara, lions are rarely a question of if, only of where.

Maasai Mara

Full Day in the Maasai Mara

Three nights in one camp allow the Mara to be seen properly, and this first full day is timed around the animals rather than the clock: out early while the cats are moving, back for lunch and a rest through the heat, out again for the evening.

Rolling plains, lines of trees marking the rivers, and in season, wildebeest massing at the crossing points: this is the landscape that built East Africa's reputation as safari country in the first place. The migration keeps its own timetable, and the guide follows it.

Maasai Mara

Second Full Day in the Maasai Mara

By the second full day the guide knows where the prides were resting, which cheetah was hunting and where the herds were heading, and can go back to them as the light and the animals shift. That is why a second day in one place is so often the better one.

Big cats hold the short grass here in every season, so the day follows whatever the plains offer that morning. The evening is the third and last at camp.

Maasai Mara to the Serengeti

Maasai Mara to the Serengeti

One last look at the Mara on an early game drive, and then the flight south, routed through Wilson and Kilimanjaro airports into Tanzania. It is a travel day, and a long one, but it ends somewhere worth the effort.

The southern Serengeti is reached by late afternoon: open plains rolling to the horizon, much quieter than the plains further north, and the start of three nights at camp.

Serengeti

Full Day in the Serengeti

The first thing that registers is the scale. The southern plains run flat and open to every horizon, broken only by granite outcrops and the odd stand of acacia, and the sky takes up most of the view.

This is a part of the Serengeti most visitors never reach, and its distance from the main circuit keeps the game drives uncrowded. Between December and March the wildebeest herds gather to calve on these short grass plains, and the predators follow close behind.

Second Full Day in the Serengeti

The kopjes are the focus of the second full day: granite outcrops that rise from the grass like islands. They hold water after rain, shade in the heat and a clear view in every direction, which is exactly why the resident lions and leopards use them as lookouts.

Between drives there is time at camp, and the evening, the last of three, comes with the particular silence of a place a long way from anywhere.

Serengeti to Ngorongoro

Serengeti to Ngorongoro

The road climbs off the plains toward the Ngorongoro highlands, with wildlife viewing along the way, and the air cools as the altitude rises. Lunch comes before the main event: the descent onto the crater floor.

Down there, inside a caldera whose walls rise two thousand feet, lives one of the densest concentrations of wildlife on earth: lion, buffalo, black rhino, hippo, and great herds of zebra and wildebeest. The vehicle climbs back to the rim at the end of the afternoon, for the first of two nights at the lodge.

First light brings the second descent, ahead of most vehicles, when the low sun turns the grass gold and mist can still be lifting off the crater floor. Lions are often still on the move at that hour, and in the right season the soda lake is lined with flamingos.

Morning is when the crater is at its best, so the afternoon is left free for the lodge and its grounds, with the view down into the caldera changing by the hour. The evening is the second on the rim.

Ngorongoro to Tarangire

Ngorongoro to Tarangire

Down off the highlands, the road runs east to Tarangire National Park, arriving in time for lunch. The landscape changes completely: dry, open woodland scattered with baobabs, many of them centuries old, their huge grey trunks scarred where elephants have stripped the bark.

The afternoon game drive follows those elephants, and there are a great many of them. Tarangire holds some of the largest concentrations in Tanzania, and the herds are rarely far from the river.

Our family had an absolutely incredible experience with Volcan Tours and Travel during our trip to Africa. Traveling with two young children (a 2 year old and a 6 year old) can sometimes be challenging, but thanks to their excellent organization and attention to detail everything went smoothly from beginning to end. The entire trip was perfectly planned from the beautiful accommodations to the unforgettable safari experiences. Seeing the wildlife up close was truly magical and everything was arranged in a way that made it comfortable and enjoyable for our whole family. A special mention to the amazing guides and drivers who were professional, friendly and wonderful with our children. They made us feel safe and welcome at all times and helped create memories that our family will cherish forever. We are so grateful to the Volcan Tours and Travel team for organizing such a unique and unforgettable journey. We highly recommend them to anyone planning a trip to Africa, especially families traveling with young children!

I had an unforgettable safari visiting Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, and Amboseli, and everything was simply perfect from start to finish. The organization, the lodges, the guides — every detail was beyond expectations. A very special thank you to Marion, who was incredibly kind, helpful, and always available. She took care of every detail, answered all my questions, and made sure everything went smoothly throughout the trip. Her dedication and warm attitude truly made the experience even better. I couldn’t have asked for a better safari — the wildlife, landscapes, and people were amazing. I highly recommend this agency and would definitely book with them again.

Without doubt one of the favourite game park in Kenya(Amboseli Game Park) Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by Volcan Tour Guide Marion, our names were mentioned on the board and we felt welcomed and with such a friendly atmosphere we had a fantastic start! The guide and tour was extremely good, very flexible and for that she deserves a special thanks. We had two great days there, which obviously also added up to the experience. Marion is such a warm personality and highly motivated guide not forgetting -recommendable!. We truly enjoyed walking the six of us through the area. The scenery was beautiful and it was a relieve to walk in such a quiet and peaceful environment. The beautiful animals at the park carried our adventure. The atmosphere is so special that it really felt like home to all of us. All respect for Marion who did a great job there; a true sample of excellent tour guide! Many thanks again and I recommend Volcan Tour Guide Marion to everyone! Welcome to the great nation of Kenya: HAKUNA MATATA!

Before you book

Questions, answered

What travellers ask us most about a safari like this one. Anything else, ask below and a specialist in Nairobi replies within one business day.

How many flights does this itinerary involve?

Light aircraft connect Nairobi to Samburu, Samburu to the Mara, and the Mara to the Serengeti. The final three parks, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire, are joined by road before a flight from Kilimanjaro back to Nairobi.

Is this a private safari?

Yes. This safari is private: your own vehicle and guide for the whole trip, and we never merge your party with another to cut costs.

How do we book, and how much is the deposit?

Press Book this safari. You can hold your dates for three days without paying while a specialist checks availability with the lodges and parks, or pay a deposit of 30, 40 or 50 percent, or the full amount, by credit or debit card through Pesapal. You can also pay by bank transfer, or in person at our Nairobi office by card. The standard schedule is a 30 percent deposit to confirm and the balance 60 days before arrival; bookings made within 60 days of departure, and gorilla or chimpanzee permits, are paid in full at booking. Card details go to Pesapal, never to Volcan.

Will we see the Great Migration and a river crossing?

The herds usually reach the Maasai Mara around July and stay until about October, crossing the Mara River many times in that period. For the rest of the year they are in the Serengeti in Tanzania. The timing is set by the rains, so no operator can promise a crossing on a given day, but our guides follow the reports every morning and position you as well as experience allows.

Do we need a visa?

Kenya: most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), applied for online before travel at etakenya.go.ke. Tanzania: visas are issued online through the official immigration portal, visa.immigration.go.tz, and on arrival at some entry points. Rules depend on your passport and change from time to time, so check them before you book flights, and always apply through the official government portal, never a third-party agent. We tell you what applies to your route when we confirm your trip.

Which vaccinations and health precautions do we need?

See a travel clinic at least six weeks before you go. Malaria is present in most safari areas of East Africa, so ask about antimalarials, insect repellent and cover-up clothing for the evenings. A yellow fever certificate can be required depending on your route and where you arrive from. Tanzania can ask for one from travellers arriving from Kenya, which matters on a route that crosses between the two.

What vehicle will we travel in?

A Toyota Land Cruiser from Volcan’s own fleet, in the company’s colours, with the same driver-guide from the first day to the last. It is yours alone for the whole safari, and every vehicle carries reusable water bottles.

Can children come on this safari?

Yes, and a private vehicle makes it easy to set the pace around them. Child rates depend on the lodges, and some camps and activities set minimum ages, so tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we confirm what applies before you pay anything.
