Volcanoes National Park safaris
The heart of Rwandan gorilla trekking, in bamboo forest on the slopes of the Virunga chain. A permit is a full-day commitment and, for most people, the reason they came to Africa. If you have a second day, track the golden monkeys, a rare and beautifully coloured primate found only in the Virunga volcanoes. A gentler, cheaper hike that complements the gorillas perfectly.

Visiting Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park in northwest Rwanda protects the Rwandan side of the Virunga volcanoes, home to habituated mountain gorilla families and to golden monkeys. Gorilla trekking here is shorter and more accessible than in many places, and Kigali is only about two and a half hours away by road.
Permits and fitness
Gorilla permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board, are limited each day, and are paid in full at booking. Trekkers must be at least 15 and reasonably fit; porters can carry bags and help on steep ground. Read gorilla permits explained: Uganda vs Rwanda.
Beyond the gorillas
Golden monkey treks, the hike to Dian Fossey's research site and visits to local communities make a two or three night stay worthwhile. Lake Kivu is close by for a restful finish.
