10-Day Luxury Kenya Safari & Diani Beach Stay
Ten days from the Maasai Mara to four days on Diani Beach, by way of Lake Naivasha and Amboseli.
A beautifully balanced private journey that moves from the drama of the savannah to the calm of the Indian Ocean. The route takes in the Maasai Mara with a hot air balloon option, the quieter waters of Lake Naivasha, Amboseli’s elephant herds beneath Kilimanjaro, and finishes with four unhurried days on Diani Beach.
Accommodation and destinations on this itinerary are fixed rather than customisable, and airport transfers and the flight to the coast are both included.
Departures run on any day subject to availability. The trip is not available to solo travellers and accepts children from age six. Rates are dated and depend on party size; see the schedule below.

Nairobi to the Maasai Mara
Day 1: Arrival and the Maasai Mara
The journey begins with a welcome in Nairobi, and then the road heads west, dropping into the Great Rift Valley. A stop at a viewpoint on the escarpment gives the first sweeping photographs of the safari, the valley floor stretching away for miles below.
Lunch is at Ilkeliani Camp, a luxury tented camp on the edge of the Maasai Mara, and later in the afternoon the first game drive heads out across the golden savannah, just as the heat eases and the animals begin to move.

Ilkeliani Camp sits on the banks of the Talek River, just outside the Maasai Mara National Reserve, with a private footbridge across the river giving direct access into the reserve. Day 2: Full day in the Maasai Mara
The Mara shows what it is famous for on the morning and afternoon drives: lion, elephant and buffalo, giraffe, cheetah, zebra and wildebeest, in a landscape of open grass and scattered acacia that seems to go on forever.
The evening returns to camp for dinner, and a night with the sounds of the wild all around the tent.

Day 3: Lake Naivasha, a quieter side of Kenya
After breakfast the road leaves the Mara and runs north east to the shores of Lake Naivasha, a quieter side of Kenya, arriving in time for lunch at Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort.
In the afternoon, Crescent Island is explored on foot, walking among freely roaming giraffe, zebra and antelope with no predators to worry about. A calm boat safari across the lake follows, bringing hippo and a wide range of waterbirds, fish eagles among them, into close view.

Day 4: Amboseli beneath Kilimanjaro
The long drive south to Amboseli National Park brings Kilimanjaro into view along the way, growing larger with every hour until it fills the skyline. Lunch is at Elerai Camp, near the park.
The afternoon's first game drive covers Amboseli's open plains, famous for the elephant herds that walk across them with the mountain behind.

Day 5: Full day in Amboseli
Morning and afternoon drives catch Amboseli's wildlife at its most active, with the elephant families moving to and from the swamps and Kilimanjaro sometimes showing its snow capped summit above the clouds.
The evening returns to camp for dinner, the last night in the bush before the coast.

Day 6: From the savannah to Diani Beach
An early transfer runs to the airport in Nairobi for the short flight to Mombasa, and then the road south to Diani Beach and Swahili Beach Resort. Within a single morning, the dust of the savannah is traded for the turquoise Indian Ocean and a long, white shoreline lined with palms.
Four unhurried days follow. Snorkelling, scuba diving, kite surfing, and excursions to Kisite Marine Park and the Shimba Hills Reserve are all available as optional extras.

Day 7: Diani Beach at leisure
The first full day at the resort is spent as little or as much as suits: walking the white sand at low tide, out on the water, or doing nothing at all beside the ocean.
Diani is one of the finest beaches in Africa, and after the early starts of the safari, a day with no alarm clock is a luxury in itself.

For anyone who wants to leave the beach for a few hours, optional excursions at extra cost reach Kisite Marine Park, where dolphins are often seen and the reef is excellent for snorkelling, or the Shimba Hills Reserve, the forested hills above the coast, home to sable antelope and elephants.

Frequently asked questions
What travellers ask us most about a safari like this one. Anything else, ask below and a specialist in Nairobi replies during office hours, Monday to Saturday.
Is this a private safari?
Yes. This safari is private: your own vehicle and guide for the whole trip, and we never merge your party with another to cut costs.
How do we book, and how much is the deposit?
Press Book this safari. You can hold your dates for three days without paying while a specialist checks availability with the lodges and parks, or pay a deposit of 30, 40 or 50 percent, or the full amount, by credit or debit card through Pesapal. You can also pay by bank transfer, or in person at our Nairobi office by card. The standard schedule is a 30 percent deposit to confirm and the balance 60 days before arrival; bookings made within 60 days of departure, and gorilla or chimpanzee permits, are paid in full at booking. Card details go to Pesapal, never to Volcan.
Will we see the Great Migration and a river crossing?
The herds usually reach the Maasai Mara around July and stay until about October, crossing the Mara River many times in that period. For the rest of the year they are in the Serengeti in Tanzania. The timing is set by the rains, so no operator can promise a crossing on a given day, but our guides follow the reports every morning and position you as well as experience allows.
Do we need a visa?
Kenya: most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), applied for online before travel at etakenya.go.ke, together with the mandatory Kenyan inbound travel health insurance (bought during the eTA application or on the eCitizen portal). Rules depend on your passport and change from time to time, so check them before you book flights, and always apply through the official government portal, never a third-party agent. We tell you what applies to your route when we confirm your trip.
Which vaccinations and health precautions do we need?
See a travel clinic at least six weeks before you go. Malaria is present in most safari areas of East Africa, so ask about antimalarials, insect repellent and cover-up clothing for the evenings. A yellow fever certificate can be required depending on your route and where you arrive from.
What vehicle will we travel in?
A pop up roof 4x4 safari vehicle, usually a Toyota Land Cruiser, provided through the licensed Kenyan transport partners we contract and work with regularly, with the same driver guide from the first day to the last. It is yours alone for the whole safari, and every vehicle carries reusable water bottles.
Can children come on this safari?
Yes, and a private vehicle makes it easy to set the pace around them. Child rates depend on the lodges, and some camps and activities set minimum ages, so tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we confirm what applies before you pay anything.
What happens if we need to cancel?
Tell us in writing as early as possible. The cancellation charges for your trip are set out in your written booking confirmation. Gorilla permits, internal flights and non-refundable lodge deposits already paid on your behalf cannot be recovered, so they are charged in full. Refunds go back to the card or account the payment came from. The detail is in our Booking & Payment Terms.
