Choosing your beach
Each stretch of coast has its own character. Tell us how you like to spend beach days and we will match the place and the hotel to you.
Diani Beach, Kenya
Long, palm lined white sand south of Mombasa, with calm lagoon water, snorkelling, dhow trips to Wasini Island and Kisite marine park, and a wide choice of hotels for families and couples. Diani is also the starting point for short safaris to Tsavo East and Amboseli.
Watamu and Kilifi, Kenya
Watamu sits beside a protected marine park with coral gardens and turtles, close to the Gede ruins and Arabuko Sokoke forest. Kilifi, on its wide creek, is quieter and good for sailing, kitesurfing and relaxed stays.
Malindi and Lamu, Kenya
Malindi has its own marine park and a lively town. Lamu is a UNESCO World Heritage Swahili town with no cars, where donkeys and dhows set the pace, and the beaches of Shela and Manda are a short boat ride away.
Mombasa North Coast, Kenya
Nyali, Bamburi and Shanzu combine beach hotels with easy access to Mombasa’s Old Town and Fort Jesus, and are close to the airport for short stays.
Zanzibar and Pemba, Tanzania
Zanzibar pairs white beaches with the history of Stone Town and spice farm visits, a short flight from Arusha, the Serengeti or Nairobi. Pemba, to the north, is greener and quieter, with some of the best diving in East Africa. Read more about Zanzibar.
When to go
The coast is warm all year. The driest and calmest months are roughly December to March and July to October. The long rains around April to June bring lower rates, and some smaller lodges close for part of that season.
How we put it together
Most travellers spend four to seven nights on safari and three to five on the beach. We arrange the flights or road transfers between the parks and the coast, so there is no waiting between the two, and the whole trip appears on one itemised quote. Beach stays can also be booked on their own, with day trips or short safaris added.
