6-Day Amboseli, Lake Naivasha & Maasai Mara Safari
Three of Kenya's most distinctive landscapes in one balanced trip: Amboseli's elephants, Lake Naivasha's calm and the Maasai Mara's Big Five.
A beautifully balanced private safari that brings together three of Kenya’s most distinctive landscapes: the elephant country of Amboseli, the tranquil waters of Lake Naivasha and the wildlife-rich plains of the Maasai Mara.
The route begins in Amboseli, where elephants roam against views of Kilimanjaro, continues to Lake Naivasha for a more tranquil interlude with a boat experience, then finishes in the Maasai Mara with game drives in search of the Big Five.
Departures run on any day subject to availability, minor accommodation and destination changes can be requested, and the trip suits solo travellers.

Nairobi to Amboseli
Nairobi to Amboseli
The road from Nairobi runs south across open Maasai country, and as the plains widen, Kilimanjaro begins to appear on the horizon. The destination is Praro Amboseli Camp, a luxury tented camp on the unfenced edge of the ALOCA Conservancy, where the wildlife moves freely past the tents.
The first afternoon is an introduction to Amboseli at its best: wide open plains, elephant herds walking toward the swamps, and the great mass of Kilimanjaro filling the southern sky whenever the cloud allows.

Amboseli National Park
Amboseli safari
A full day of game drives works Amboseli's swamps and open plains. The swamps are fed from underground by water running off Kilimanjaro, and they draw the elephants in every day, the families wading in to drink and bathe while the youngsters play at the edges.
Buffalo, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest share the grassland, and lions sometimes rest in the long grass near the water. Kilimanjaro dominates the horizon all day, and it is clearest in the early morning, before the haze builds, which is the best reason for an early start.

Amboseli to Lake Naivasha
Amboseli to Lake Naivasha
The road leaves Amboseli's dry plains and runs north, past Nairobi and down into the Great Rift Valley to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake ringed with acacia woodland. After the heat and dust of Amboseli, the green shores and cool water make a welcome change of pace.
The highlight of the afternoon is a boat trip on the lake. Hippos surface close to the boat, fish eagles swoop down to snatch fish from the water, and the shoreline is busy with herons, kingfishers and cormorants. The night is at Lake Naivasha Simba Lodge.

Lake Naivasha to the Maasai Mara
From Naivasha the road runs west, dropping off the Rift Valley floor and crossing the farmland beyond until the long grass of the Maasai Mara takes over. The reserve is reached by early afternoon, at Zebra Plains Mara Camp, a tented camp inside the reserve.
A first game drive heads out across open grassland that is prime territory for lion, and for the resident herds of topi, zebra and wildebeest that keep the plains in near constant motion. It is a fine introduction to the full day that follows.

Maasai Mara National Reserve
Full day in the Maasai Mara
Morning and afternoon game drives work the Mara's open plains and river lines in search of the Big Five. Lion prides, elephant herds and buffalo are among the more reliable sightings, while leopard, resting in the trees along the rivers, and rhino are the rarer finds that make every extra minute in the vehicle worthwhile.
Between the drives there is time to rest at camp through the heat. For anyone who wants it, a visit to a Maasai village can be added, a chance to meet the people who share this land with the wildlife.

Questions, answered
What travellers ask us most about a safari like this one. Anything else, ask below and a specialist in Nairobi replies within one business day.
Is this a private safari?
Yes. This safari is private: your own vehicle and guide for the whole trip, and we never merge your party with another to cut costs.
How do we book, and how much is the deposit?
Press Book this safari. You can hold your dates for three days without paying while a specialist checks availability with the lodges and parks, or pay a deposit of 30, 40 or 50 percent, or the full amount, by credit or debit card through Pesapal. You can also pay by bank transfer, or in person at our Nairobi office by card. The standard schedule is a 30 percent deposit to confirm and the balance 60 days before arrival; bookings made within 60 days of departure, and gorilla or chimpanzee permits, are paid in full at booking. Card details go to Pesapal, never to Volcan.
Will we see the Great Migration and a river crossing?
The herds usually reach the Maasai Mara around July and stay until about October, crossing the Mara River many times in that period. For the rest of the year they are in the Serengeti in Tanzania. The timing is set by the rains, so no operator can promise a crossing on a given day, but our guides follow the reports every morning and position you as well as experience allows.
Do we need a visa?
Kenya: most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), applied for online before travel at etakenya.go.ke. Rules depend on your passport and change from time to time, so check them before you book flights, and always apply through the official government portal, never a third-party agent. We tell you what applies to your route when we confirm your trip.
Which vaccinations and health precautions do we need?
See a travel clinic at least six weeks before you go. Malaria is present in most safari areas of East Africa, so ask about antimalarials, insect repellent and cover-up clothing for the evenings. A yellow fever certificate can be required depending on your route and where you arrive from.
What vehicle will we travel in?
A Toyota Land Cruiser from Volcan’s own fleet, in the company’s colours, with the same driver-guide from the first day to the last. It is yours alone for the whole safari, and every vehicle carries reusable water bottles.
Can children come on this safari?
Yes, and a private vehicle makes it easy to set the pace around them. Child rates depend on the lodges, and some camps and activities set minimum ages, so tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we confirm what applies before you pay anything.
What happens if we need to cancel?
Tell us in writing as early as possible. The cancellation charges for your trip are set out in your written booking confirmation. Gorilla permits, internal flights and non-refundable lodge deposits already paid on your behalf cannot be recovered, so they are charged in full. Refunds go back to the card or account the payment came from. The detail is in our Booking & Payment Terms.
