Visiting Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru National Park surrounds a Rift Valley soda lake known for flamingos and pelicans, and it is one of the best places in Kenya to see both black and white rhino. Rothschild's giraffe, buffalo, waterbuck, lion and leopard live in its acacia woodland, and Baboon Cliff gives a wide view over the lake.

Flamingos and water levels

Flamingo numbers rise and fall with the lake's water level and salt content, so we check current conditions before promising large flocks. The rhinos and woodland wildlife are reliable all year.

How to fit it in

Nakuru is about three hours from Nairobi and sits on the road to the Maasai Mara, so it pairs naturally with Lake Naivasha, Hell's Gate and the Mara. One night or a full day is usually enough.
