12-Day Bush to Beach Luxury Escape
A complete Tanzania escape: the wildlife of the Northern Circuit first, then five nights of white sand and warm water in Nungwi, Zanzibar.
A complete Tanzania escape that moves naturally from the wildlife-rich Northern Circuit to the Indian Ocean. The route explores Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Central Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater before flying to Zanzibar for five nights in Nungwi. The result is a well-balanced private journey: remarkable wildlife first, then white sand beaches, warm water and unhurried island time.
The safari travels in a pop-up-roof 4×4 with an air transfer to the coast, and airport transfers are included throughout.
Departures run on any day subject to availability. The trip is not available to solo travellers, and accepts children from age two.

What you are likely to see
Solid tone means seen on almost every departure. Outline means possible, and worth the patience. Nothing wild is guaranteed.

12 days, in order
Each day lists the route, the driving time, the meals included and the lodge for that night.
Arusha
Arrival in Arusha
Arrival in Arusha, the gateway town to Tanzania's northern safari circuit, is followed by the transfer to Kahawa House, a luxury lodge set among coffee gardens on the edge of town. Mount Meru rises behind it, and on a clear afternoon its summit stands sharp against the sky.
The first evening is deliberately unhurried, with nothing planned before the safari begins in the morning. It is a chance to rest, enjoy dinner and sleep off the journey.

Arusha to Tarangire
Tarangire National Park
The road runs south from Arusha across open Maasai country to Tarangire National Park, for a full day among its baobabs, open grassland and river country. The baobabs are enormous and many centuries old, and the elephants that move between them gather along the Tarangire River in some of the largest herds in Tanzania.
Lion, giraffe, zebra and a wide variety of plains animals are all likely through the day. The night is at Lake Burunge Tented Lodge, beside a lake less than an hour from the park.

Tarangire to Lake Manyara
Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara National Park is the next stop, for a day of game viewing in a remarkably varied landscape. The road enters through a lush groundwater forest, busy with baboons and blue monkeys, before opening onto the lake shore, where elephant, giraffe and buffalo graze beneath the towering Rift Valley escarpment.
The park's famous tree climbing lions are sometimes found resting in the branches, and in the right season the lake is lined with flamingos. The night is at Ngorongoro Marera Mountain View Lodge, in the highlands above.

Central Serengeti National Park
Central Serengeti National Park
The road climbs through the Ngorongoro highlands and then drops west onto the Serengeti, where the land opens into grassland that runs to every horizon. Two nights in the Central Serengeti begin here, an area known for its abundant resident wildlife and excellent predator sightings.
Game drives begin on arrival, among the herds and the granite kopjes. The night is at Dove Serengeti Camp, a luxury tented camp inside the park.

The second Serengeti day ranges wider, following the Seronera valley, where the riverine woodland of fig and sausage trees is a favourite resting place for leopards, often seen draped along a branch through the heat of the day.
Out on the open grassland, cheetah use termite mounds as lookouts over the plains, and lion prides rest on the kopjes. Morning and afternoon drives give the best chance of seeing all three of the big cats in a single day.

Serengeti to Ngorongoro
Ngorongoro Crater
The road heads east again, back toward the highlands, for a descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, a natural amphitheatre with an astonishing concentration of wildlife inside its walls: lion and buffalo, black rhino and hippo, and great herds of zebra and wildebeest.
After the crater, the final evening of the safari is spent at Ngorongoro Marera Mountain View Lodge, in the cool air of the highlands.

Ngorongoro to Nungwi
Nungwi, Zanzibar
A short flight carries the journey from the northern circuit to Zanzibar, trading dry plains for humid, palm lined roads and the scent of the spice island. A transfer runs north to Nungwi, at the island's tip, where white sand and calm, reef sheltered water mark the start of five nights at a very different pace.
The night is at Z Hotel, in Nungwi, with the ocean right on the doorstep.

Nungwi, Zanzibar
Nungwi, Zanzibar
A day at leisure in Nungwi, where the beach shelves gently into clear, reef sheltered water that is ideal for swimming at any tide.
For anyone who wants to be in the water rather than beside it, snorkelling trips out to the nearby coral gardens can be arranged locally, with turtles and bright reef fish among the regular sights.

Nungwi, Zanzibar
Nungwi, Zanzibar
Another open day on the coast. Stone Town, Zanzibar's old trading quarter, is a short drive away for anyone ready for a change from the beach: a half day excursion wanders its narrow lanes, past carved wooden doors, old merchant houses and a working spice market full of colour and scent.
Back in Nungwi, the afternoon is free to spend by the water.

The sea sets the pace. After a slow morning on the beach, a traditional dhow is available in the late afternoon for anyone who wants to be on the water as the light turns. Sunset over the channel, watched from the deck of a dhow, is one of Nungwi's best known sights.

The last full day on the coast, with the reef and the beach still the main attractions. A final swim, a last long lunch and the sun going down over the water make a gentle end to twelve days that began in the bush.

Questions, answered
What travellers ask us most about a safari like this one. Anything else, ask below and a specialist in Nairobi replies within one business day.
Is this a private safari?
The trip is arranged for your party alone, but at the camps on this route the game drives and activities are run by the camp and can be shared with other guests, as the trip details above explain. Ask us if you would like a private vehicle at the camps.
How do we book, and how much is the deposit?
Press Book this safari. You can hold your dates for three days without paying while a specialist checks availability with the lodges and parks, or pay a deposit of 30, 40 or 50 percent, or the full amount, by Visa, Mastercard or M-Pesa through Pesapal. Larger balances can also be paid by bank transfer. The balance is due on the date in your written confirmation, and always before departure. Card details go to Pesapal, never to Volcan.
Will we see the Great Migration and a river crossing?
The herds usually reach the Masai Mara around July and stay until about October, crossing the Mara River many times in that period. For the rest of the year they are in the Serengeti in Tanzania. The timing is set by the rains, so no operator can promise a crossing on a given day, but our guides follow the reports every morning and position you as well as experience allows.
Do we need a visa?
Tanzania: visas are issued online through the official immigration portal, visa.immigration.go.tz, and on arrival at some entry points. Rules depend on your passport and change from time to time, so check them before you book flights, and always apply through the official government portal, never a third-party agent. We tell you what applies to your route when we confirm your trip.
Which vaccinations and health precautions do we need?
See a travel clinic at least six weeks before you go. Malaria is present in most safari areas of East Africa, so ask about antimalarials, insect repellent and cover-up clothing for the evenings. A yellow fever certificate can be required depending on your route and where you arrive from.
Can children come on this safari?
Yes, and a private vehicle makes it easy to set the pace around them. Child rates depend on the lodges, and some camps and activities set minimum ages, so tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we confirm what applies before you pay anything.
What happens if we need to cancel?
Tell us in writing as early as possible. The cancellation charges for your trip are set out in your written booking confirmation. Gorilla permits, internal flights and non-refundable lodge deposits already paid on your behalf cannot be recovered, so they are charged in full. Refunds go back to the card or account the payment came from. The detail is in our Booking & Payment Terms.
Can we change this itinerary?
Yes. Every route on this site is a starting point. The dates, the number of nights, the lodges and the pace can all change, and we re-price the trip before you commit to anything. There are no fixed departures and no minimum group size.
