Lake Burunge Tented Lodge
Shore of Lake Burunge, community concession near Tarangire National Park
Lake Burunge Tented Lodge sits on the shore of Lake Burunge, a shallow soda lake fed by the Tarangire River, about ten minutes from Tarangire National Park. The camp stands on a concession run by the local Maasai community, with the western escarpment of the Great Rift Valley rising behind it, giving a peaceful wilderness feel while keeping Tarangire’s elephant herds and baobab country close at hand. Tents are set under thatch on raised wooden platforms in a grove of bushland overlooking the lake. From around July to November the lake fills with flamingos, and in the rains elephants and lions come to drink, so there is often something to watch from camp. Days centre on game drives in Tarangire, with lakeshore walks and canoeing on the lake adding variety, and the birding here is among the best in the country. Cultural visits with the neighbouring Maasai offer insight into local life. Children of all ages are welcome, so the lodge suits families as well as birders, couples and travellers wanting a quieter base near Tarangire.
