The migration’s home for most of the year, and the park where the classic open-plains safari picture was made. Cheetah, leopard and lion in numbers few parks match.

Visiting Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti is Tanzania's best known park and the home of the Great Migration for most of the year. Its open grass plains, granite kopjes and river woodlands hold some of the highest densities of lion, cheetah and leopard in Africa, alongside elephant, giraffe, buffalo and huge herds of plains game.
Where the herds are
From about December to March the wildebeest calve on the southern plains around Ndutu, and predators follow closely. Between April and June the herds move west and north, and from roughly July to October they reach the northern Serengeti and cross the Mara River into Kenya. The timing follows the rains, so we place your camps where the herds are most likely to be for your dates, and we never promise a river crossing on a given day.
Getting there and how long to stay
Most safaris reach the Serengeti by road from Arusha through Ngorongoro, or by light aircraft to one of the park's airstrips. Three nights is a good minimum, split between two areas if your dates fall between migration seasons. It pairs naturally with Ngorongoro, Tarangire and a Zanzibar beach finish.
