10-Day Lewa, Mathews Range & Maasai Mara Safari
Two of Kenya's least visited landscapes, Lewa's rhino sanctuary and the Mathews Mountain Range, before closing with three nights in the Maasai Mara.
A private circuit built around Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, one of Africa’s most successful rhino sanctuaries, and the Mathews Range, a forested mountain wilderness in Samburu land reached only by air. Three nights in the Maasai Mara close the trip.

Nairobi
Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi
The long flight ends at Jomo Kenyatta International, where a private transfer is waiting. The drive continues to a quiet boutique property set among indigenous trees, where birdsong replaces the traffic almost as soon as the gate closes.
The rest of the day is unhurried: time to shower, rest and adjust to the altitude before the flight north to Lewa in the morning.

House of Waine is an elegant boutique hotel in the leafy Karen and Langata suburbs of Nairobi, at the foot of the Ngong Hills, set in around two and a half acres of quiet gardens. It makes a gracious base before or after a safari, around fifteen minutes from Wilson Airport for light aircraft flights […]
Day 2: Nairobi to Lewa Downs
A light aircraft flies north over the green central highlands to Nanyuki, a small town that sits right on the equator at the foot of Mount Kenya. From there the road continues to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, one of the most successful rhino sanctuaries in Africa, with the mountain's jagged, snow streaked peaks on the skyline to the south whenever the cloud clears.
Lunch is taken on arrival, and a first game drive follows in the afternoon, across open plains and acacia country where rhino, elephant and reticulated giraffe are all easily found.

Lewa Safari Camp is a tented camp in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a well known private reserve of around 65,000 acres in northern Kenya that is home to both black and white rhinos and to the world’s largest population of Grevy’s zebra. It is reached by light aircraft into Lewa’s own airstrip, and the area […]
Lewa Downs
Day 3: Full Day at Lewa Downs
Lewa is one of the best places in Kenya to see rhino, black and white alike, and a full day of drives, morning and afternoon, gives time to spend with them properly. The conservancy also holds one of the largest populations of Grevy's zebra left anywhere, alongside reticulated giraffe, elephant, lion and cheetah.
What makes Lewa different is the story behind it: a former cattle ranch turned into a working model of conservation, where the neighbouring communities share in the benefit and help protect the wildlife. The guides here tell that story well, and it adds real depth to the day.

Day 4: Lewa Downs to Mathews Range
The flight north crosses Samburu land, dry and red and empty, to Namunyak, a forested oasis at the foot of the Mathews Range that can only be reached by air. From above, the plains give way abruptly to green mountains rising out of the lowlands like an island.
Lunch is taken on arrival, and an afternoon game drive follows, in country that very few safari travellers ever see.

Sarara Camp lies in the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust in northern Kenya, tucked into the lower slopes of Wamba Mountain in the Mathews Range. This is a vast, remote landscape where you are unlikely to see another safari vehicle, and the community conservancy model means your stay directly supports the Samburu people who live here. […]
Mathews Range
Day 5: Full Day in the Mathews Range
The Mathews Range makes for a very different kind of safari, among forested mountains, dry sand rivers and rocky hills. Morning and afternoon drives are joined by activities that go beyond the standard game drive, arranged directly through the camp.
This is Samburu country, and the region is known for its singing wells, where young warriors sing to their cattle as they draw water by hand during the dry season. The wildlife is wilder here too, elephant, leopard and wild dog among it, and far less used to vehicles, which makes every sighting feel earned.

Day 6: Second Full Day in the Mathews Range
A second full day in one of Kenya's least visited wilderness areas, where the absence of other people becomes part of the experience. The drives run in the morning and afternoon, and the heat of the day is spent at camp, looking out over the valley.
After dark, far from any town, the sky over the Mathews Range is thick with stars, a fitting end to the last evening in the north.

Day 7: Mathews Range to the Maasai Mara
The flight south crosses the Great Rift Valley from the dry north to the Maasai Mara, and the change could hardly be greater: red rock and forest give way to rolling grassland that seems to run on forever, dotted with herds.
The first game drive follows that afternoon, onto plains that hold some of the highest numbers of lion, cheetah and leopard in Africa.

Rekero Camp is a small, classic tented camp set on the banks of the Talek River inside the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Its position puts guests near three regular river crossing points, so during the wildebeest migration, roughly June to October, it is a very good base for watching crossings and the predators that follow […]
Maasai Mara
Day 8: Full Day in the Maasai Mara
With a packed lunch on board, the first of two full days is spent out on the plains from morning to afternoon, shaped around whatever the Mara offers. That might be a pride of lions with cubs, a cheetah stalking gazelle across the open grass, or, in the migration months, the great herds gathering at the Mara River.
Because the vehicle does not need to return to camp at midday, it can stay wherever the action is for as long as it lasts.

Maasai Mara
Day 9: Second Full Day in the Maasai Mara
By the second day, the Mara has taken on a shape: the prides and their territories, the rivers, the places the herds like to gather. The guide uses all of it to make the most of the last full day of the safari, returning to the best of the earlier sightings or setting out to find something new.
The evening in camp is a fitting close to a safari that has crossed some of Kenya's most varied country, from the rhino sanctuaries of Lewa to the mountains of the north and the plains of the Mara.

Day 10: Departure
A last game drive at first light precedes the flight back to Nairobi. After a private lunch, the afternoon goes to two of the city's best known sights: the Karen Blixen Museum, the farmhouse at the foot of the Ngong Hills where the author of Out of Africa lived, and the Giraffe Centre, where the endangered Rothschild's giraffe come to the raised platform to be fed. The transfer to the airport follows, in time for the departure flight.

Frequently asked questions
What travellers ask us most about a safari like this one. Anything else, ask below and a specialist in Nairobi replies during office hours, Monday to Saturday.
Is this a private safari?
Yes. This safari is private: your own vehicle and guide for the whole trip, and we never merge your party with another to cut costs.
How do we book, and how much is the deposit?
Press Book this safari. You can hold your dates for three days without paying while a specialist checks availability with the lodges and parks, or pay a deposit of 30, 40 or 50 percent, or the full amount, by credit or debit card through Pesapal. You can also pay by bank transfer, or in person at our Nairobi office by card. The standard schedule is a 30 percent deposit to confirm and the balance 60 days before arrival; bookings made within 60 days of departure, and gorilla or chimpanzee permits, are paid in full at booking. Card details go to Pesapal, never to Volcan.
Will we see the Great Migration and a river crossing?
The herds usually reach the Maasai Mara around July and stay until about October, crossing the Mara River many times in that period. For the rest of the year they are in the Serengeti in Tanzania. The timing is set by the rains, so no operator can promise a crossing on a given day, but our guides follow the reports every morning and position you as well as experience allows.
Do we need a visa?
Kenya: most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), applied for online before travel at etakenya.go.ke, together with the mandatory Kenyan inbound travel health insurance (bought during the eTA application or on the eCitizen portal). Rules depend on your passport and change from time to time, so check them before you book flights, and always apply through the official government portal, never a third-party agent. We tell you what applies to your route when we confirm your trip.
Which vaccinations and health precautions do we need?
See a travel clinic at least six weeks before you go. Malaria is present in most safari areas of East Africa, so ask about antimalarials, insect repellent and cover-up clothing for the evenings. A yellow fever certificate can be required depending on your route and where you arrive from.
What vehicle will we travel in?
A pop up roof 4x4 safari vehicle, usually a Toyota Land Cruiser, provided through the licensed Kenyan transport partners we contract and work with regularly, with the same driver guide from the first day to the last. It is yours alone for the whole safari, and every vehicle carries reusable water bottles.
Can children come on this safari?
Yes, and a private vehicle makes it easy to set the pace around them. Child rates depend on the lodges, and some camps and activities set minimum ages, so tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we confirm what applies before you pay anything.
What happens if we need to cancel?
Tell us in writing as early as possible. The cancellation charges for your trip are set out in your written booking confirmation. Gorilla permits, internal flights and non-refundable lodge deposits already paid on your behalf cannot be recovered, so they are charged in full. Refunds go back to the card or account the payment came from. The detail is in our Booking & Payment Terms.
