Sarara Camp
Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust, Mathews Range, northern Kenya
Sarara Camp lies in the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust in northern Kenya, tucked into the lower slopes of Wamba Mountain in the Mathews Range. This is a vast, remote landscape where you are unlikely to see another safari vehicle, and the community conservancy model means your stay directly supports the Samburu people who live here. The camp is small and personal, with tented rooms opening onto private decks, and a natural rock swimming pool overlooks a waterhole where elephant, kudu and even wild dog come to drink. One of the most memorable experiences in the region is visiting the singing wells between July and October, when Samburu herders sing as they draw water for their cattle. Activities are varied and active: game drives, guided walks and hikes in the Mathews Range, fly camping with camels along seasonal riverbeds, beading workshops with Samburu women, birdwatching, bush dining and scenic flights. Sarara suits adventurous travellers, walkers, families and anyone with a strong interest in culture and conservation.
