Sand Rivers Lodge
Rufiji River, Nyerere National Park
Sand Rivers is a classic Nomad Tanzania lodge on a wide bend of the Rufiji River in Nyerere National Park, the protected area formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve. Founded in the early 1990s by the well known guide Richard Bonham, it sits in a wild and remote part of southern Tanzania, reached by a short transfer from Kiba airstrip. Accommodation is in eight elevated cottages of timber, stone and thatch: riverside rooms that open onto the water, and hillside suites set a little higher, each with its own lounge and private plunge pool. A swimming pool with sun loungers lies a short stroll from the main lodge. The Selous area can be explored in several ways, and here you can combine game drives with walking safaris, boat trips on the Rufiji, fishing and nights out on a fly camp under canvas. The emphasis on guiding and variety makes Sand Rivers a strong choice for returning safari travellers, keen walkers, honeymooners and anyone looking for a remote wilderness area away from the busier northern circuit.
