Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge
Foothills of the Virunga volcanoes, edge of Volcanoes National Park
Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge sits in the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes on the edge of Volcanoes National Park in north-west Rwanda, about two hours’ drive from Kigali, making it a natural base for gorilla trekking. The lodge is built from stone in a traditional Rwandan style with terracotta tiled roofs, and offers a small number of cottages and suites, including a family unit. Each has a spacious sitting area, a fireplace for the cool mountain evenings, an en suite bathroom and a sheltered veranda looking out towards the volcanoes. Meals are served in the dining room or on the outdoor deck, and there is a bar and a library for quiet afternoons. The lodge is owned by a community trust, so your stay helps fund local development and conservation around the gorilla habitat. Alongside gorilla tracking you can trek for golden monkeys, hike to Dian Fossey’s research camp and grave, join cultural and birding walks, cycle with a guide or visit the Twin Lakes and Lake Kivu. It suits couples, families and anyone wanting a warm, personal stay close to the trailheads.
