Nkungwe Camp
Mahale Mountains National Park, shore of Lake Tanganyika
Nkungwe Beach Lodge, also known as Nkungwe Camp, lies on a sandy beach on the shore of Lake Tanganyika in Mahale Mountains National Park, one of the most remote parts of western Tanzania. There are no roads in the park, so guests fly to the Mahale airstrip and continue by boat along the lake to the lodge, which adds to the sense of adventure. The main activity is chimpanzee trekking: each day guests set out on foot into the forested mountains to spend an hour with a habituated chimpanzee community. Accommodation is in eight spacious tented rooms with en suite bathrooms, raised on wooden platforms at the edge of the beach. The main area sits under a large thatched roof on wooden decking with views across the lake, and meals make good use of fresh fish from Lake Tanganyika. Walks and boat outings on the lake complete the stay. The lodge suits adventurous travellers, primate enthusiasts and photographers looking for a simple, comfortable base for chimp trekking.
