Mara Sopa Lodge
Oloolaimutia Hills, south-eastern boundary of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, near Oloolaimutia Gate
Mara Sopa Lodge, also known as Masai Mara Sopa Lodge, is set on the slopes of the Oloolaimutia Hills along the south-eastern boundary of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, within walking distance of Oloolaimutia Gate. Being so close to the gate means game drives reach the open plains quickly, with chances of the Big Five and, roughly between July and October, the river crossings of the great migration. One of the earlier lodges in the area, it has mature, leafy gardens, and its buildings follow the shape of traditional African round houses with conical roofs, stretching along the hillside around a central swimming pool. Accommodation includes standard rooms, interconnecting family rooms, suites and a honeymoon suite. There is a main restaurant, an outdoor boma for dinners when the weather allows, a bar and lounge and a gift shop, and bush meals can be arranged. Beyond morning and afternoon game drives, guests can take nature walks, go birdwatching, visit a nearby Maasai village or float over the reserve in a hot air balloon at dawn. It suits couples, groups and first-time Mara visitors.
