Mahogany Springs Lodge
Buhoma, northern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Mahogany Springs Lodge is set near the village of Buhoma on the northern edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the place where gorilla trekking in Bwindi first began. Buhoma is the most accessible of Bwindi’s trailheads, and one of the habituated gorilla families often ranges close to the village, so a stay here keeps the trek start within easy reach and leaves more energy for the forest itself. The lodge is small and personal, with eight suites including superior rooms and honeymoon suites, each with an en suite bathroom and a veranda looking out over the forest and the surrounding green mountains. Guests can dine on their own veranda or in the main building, which also enjoys fine views, and fires are lit for relaxing in the cool mountain evenings. Thoughtful touches stand out: packed lunches for trekking days, hot water bottles at night and muddy boots cleaned and laundry returned the next morning. It suits gorilla trekkers, couples and honeymooners looking for warm service in a forest setting.
