Katavi Wildlife Camp
Edge of the Katisunga Plains, Katavi National Park
Katavi Wildlife Camp is one of only a handful of camps in Katavi National Park, a remote and little visited wilderness in western Tanzania. It sits on the edge of the vast Katisunga Plains, close to the park’s main airstrip, and in the dry season animals gather around a permanent water source near camp. By August, large herds of buffalo are often seen right in front of the tents. The camp is run by the Fox family, who also operate camps in Ruaha and Nyerere, and it has a personal, traditional feel. There are just six tented rooms overlooking the plain, each with an en suite bathroom with solar heated showers, a veranda and a hammock for watching the wildlife from your own doorstep. Game drives explore the plains, and with more than four hundred bird species recorded in the park, birding is excellent. The camp opens from June to February. It suits experienced safari travellers, photographers and anyone looking for a remote wilderness area, and is recommended for ages twelve and over.
