Il Moran Governors’ Camp
Mara River, Musiara area, Maasai Mara National Reserve
Governors’ Il Moran Camp is a small tented camp in a forested stretch along the Mara River, in the Musiara area of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Being inside the reserve and beside the river puts you in an area with excellent wildlife, and the camp is well placed for the wildebeest migration, which typically moves through the Mara between July and October. There are only ten safari tents, each notably spacious, with beds crafted from fallen olive trees and en suite bathrooms with double basins and a classic Victorian bathtub. The lounge, bar and dining tent overlook the river, where animals regularly come down to drink. Early morning game drives are the heart of a stay, and hot air balloon safaris drift over the plains at sunrise. Walking safaris with a resident naturalist, visits to a nearby Maasai village and candlelit bush dinners on request add further depth to the experience. Children are welcome, though the quiet setting makes the camp popular with honeymooners and couples looking for privacy and classic safari style.
