Gibb’s Farm
Karatu, Ngorongoro Highlands
Gibb’s Farm lies on the forested slopes of the Ngorongoro Highlands near the town of Karatu, roughly midway between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater and about two hours by road from Arusha. It is a working organic coffee farm, and much of what reaches the table is grown in its own gardens, with farm-fresh coffee and home-baked cakes at afternoon tea. Guests stay in 17 cottages spread across the grounds, each with a fireplace lounge, local artwork, handcrafted furniture, a large stone bath, indoor and outdoor showers and a verandah looking over the forest and plantation. There is also a two-bedroom family cottage. Between game drives in the crater and Lake Manyara, there is plenty to do on the farm itself: coffee roasting, bread making, farm and village walks, guided hikes to waterfalls and elephant caves in the forest, and visits to a traditional healer to learn about medicinal plants. An African treatment spa rounds off the day. Gibb’s Farm suits couples, families, food lovers and travellers who want a slower, more cultural interlude on safari.
