Basecamp Masai Mara
Talek River, Koiyaki Group Ranch, beside the Maasai Mara National Reserve
Basecamp Masai Mara stands on the north bank of the Talek River, next to Talek Gate on the north-eastern edge of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The camp is on community land just outside the reserve, and when the river is low a private footbridge gives direct access into the park. Spacious canvas tents sit on wooden platforms under thatch, well spaced for privacy, each with an en-suite bathroom, solar-heated shower and a veranda looking over the river. Basecamp is known for its environmental approach. It runs largely on solar power, harvests rainwater, recycles grey water into its vegetable gardens, builds with natural materials and has planted thousands of trees. It also works closely with the Maasai community, and guests can visit the fair trade beading workshop that employs local women. Activities include game drives into the reserve, guided walks to the Talek community, school visits and optional hot air balloon flights. Children have their own club with activities such as bow making and beadwork. Basecamp suits families, budget conscious travellers and anyone who values sustainability and an informal setting.
