Akagera National Park safaris
Eastern Rwanda’s savannah park, where lion, rhino and elephant have all been reintroduced since 2015. Boat safaris on Lake Ihema and the classic game drive, without the crowds.

Visiting Akagera National Park
Akagera in eastern Rwanda is the country's savannah park, with lakes, wetlands and open plains that feel very different from the mountain forests of the west. Its restoration has brought back lion and rhino, so it is now Rwanda's place to see the Big Five.
What to see
Game drives find elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, antelope and lion, and a boat trip on Lake Ihema brings you close to hippo, crocodile and water birds. Guided night drives are possible.
When to go
The drier months, roughly June to September and December to February, are best for game viewing.
How to combine it
Akagera is about two to three hours by road from Kigali, so it fits easily at the start or end of a Rwanda trip, adding a classic savannah safari to gorilla trekking.
