Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort
Lake Naivasha shore, Rift Valley floor
Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort sits on the floor of the Great Rift Valley beside Lake Naivasha, a little over an hour’s drive from Nairobi. Its grounds cover around 120 acres of grassland dotted with acacia trees, and wildlife wanders freely: waterbuck, giraffe and vervet and colobus monkeys are often seen, and hippos sometimes come up from the lake at night to graze on the lawns. The resort has 84 rooms arranged in two-storey cottages, each with a large window and a veranda looking out over the lake or the gardens. A few ground-floor rooms interconnect, which is helpful for families. Facilities include a swimming pool with a poolside bar, a tennis court and a restaurant serving Continental, Swahili and Mediterranean dishes. There is plenty to do nearby, including boat trips on the lake, nature and bird walks, horse riding, cycling and day trips to Crescent Island, Elsamere and Hell’s Gate National Park. Birdwatchers will find the lake especially rewarding. The resort suits families, couples and anyone wanting a restful pause between longer safari drives.
