The Selous Serena Camp
Zema River, Nyerere National Park
Selous Serena Camp is a permanent tented camp on the Zema River in Nyerere National Park, the protected area formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve and part of a vast World Heritage wilderness in southern Tanzania. Run by the Serena group, the camp has twelve tents with canvas walls under thatched roofs, en suite Victorian-style bathrooms and private decks for watching the bush. An infinity pool and sundeck sit above the camp, useful in the heat of the day. What makes the Selous area special is the variety of ways to explore it: as well as game drives, you can head out on walking safaris, motorboat safaris and sundowner cruises, and enjoy bush or sandbank picnics, with excellent birdwatching throughout. The camp is unfenced, so animals may pass through and guests are escorted after dark. Note that the best game viewing areas are around an hour’s drive from camp. It suits travellers who want to combine drives, boating and walking in a less visited wilderness, and those wanting a comfortable, good value option in the south.
