The Highlands Camp
Slopes of Olmoti Crater, Ngorongoro Conservation Area
The Highlands is a striking Asilia Africa camp on the forested slopes of Olmoti Crater in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, at one of the highest points in the region and about an hour’s drive from the Ngorongoro Crater. Its eight dome suites, made from canvas and clear panels, sit among the trees and look out over rolling hills, volcanic peaks and grassy plains. Each dome has an en suite bathroom and a wood burning stove for chilly highland nights, and there is an interconnecting family suite as well as a honeymoon suite with its own outdoor hot tub. A small spa with a private sauna adds to the comfort. The camp suits travellers who want more than a single crater drive: you can hike to the top of Olmoti for the view, walk down into Empakaai Crater to its soda lake, often busy with flamingos, and spend a full day on the Ngorongoro Crater floor looking for lion, elephant and rhino. Visits to a nearby Maasai village can also be arranged. It suits active couples, honeymooners and families with children aged five and over.
