Lazy Lagoon
Lagoon peninsula off Bagamoyo, mainland Tanzania coast
Lazy Lagoon is a barefoot beach lodge on a quiet peninsula across the lagoon from the historic town of Bagamoyo, on Tanzania’s mainland coast facing the Zanzibar Channel. It is reached by a short motor launch ride and lies roughly two hours north of Dar es Salaam, which makes it an easy and peaceful addition to a southern Tanzania safari. The lodge is run by the Fox family, who also operate safari camps in Tanzania’s southern parks, so combining bush and beach is straightforward. Guests stay in stilted, open sided bandas with thatched roofs, spread along the sand, each with a deck facing the ocean and space for a family. Days drift between the beach and the swimming pool, which is the safer place to swim as the lagoon has strong currents. Kayaking, snorkelling, sailing, windsurfing and paddleboarding are on offer, and a sunset dhow trip with some fishing is popular. Day trips to Bagamoyo and the Kaole ruins add history. It suits couples looking for a quiet, unhurried stay and families who want space to relax.
