Elewana Elsa’s Kopje Meru
Mughwango Hill, Meru National Park
Elewana Elsa’s Kopje is built into the rocky crags of Mughwango Hill in Meru National Park, just above the site of George Adamson’s original camp. The lodge takes its name from Elsa, the lioness made famous by Joy and George Adamson in Born Free, and the story is still part of the area’s history. Nine individually designed, open-plan cottages blend into the hillside, each with an en-suite bathroom and views across the plains. For honeymooners there is a three-level suite with its own sitting room. An infinity pool overlooks the wild Meru plains, and dinners are usually served at individual tables under the stars, with private romantic dinners on request. Meru is one of Kenya’s quieter parks, with rivers, palm groves and open bush, so you often have sightings to yourself. Activities include day and night game drives, guided bush walks, bush meals and sundowners, cultural visits, a day trip to the Tana River and an excursion to the Adamson camp at Kora. Massages and spa treatments are available. Elsa’s Kopje suits couples, honeymooners and seasoned safari travellers seeking somewhere off the beaten track.
