Nairobi

Arrival in Nairobi

Arrival in Nairobi is followed by the transfer to The Boma Nairobi, a luxury hotel in the city, where the room is ready for a rest after the journey. Depending on the flight time, the afternoon may be free to relax.

In the evening, a welcome dinner brings everyone together, followed by a safari briefing that walks through the fourteen days ahead: the route across two countries, the camps and lodges, and the relaxed pace that shapes the whole trip.

Nairobi to Amboseli

Nairobi to Amboseli

After breakfast the road runs south out of Nairobi across the wide, dry plains of Maasai country, and as the morning goes on, Kilimanjaro begins to show itself ahead, its snow capped summit floating above the haze. Amboseli National Park lies at its foot.

The night is at Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge, and the afternoon game drive is gentle and unhurried. Amboseli's large elephant herds are the main attraction, and lion, cheetah and buffalo are all possible on the open ground around the swamps.

Amboseli National Park

Full day in Amboseli

A full day in Amboseli, with game drives timed to suit. Early light is the best chance of seeing Kilimanjaro's summit clear of cloud, and watching elephants walk beneath the mountain as the sun comes up is one of those moments that stays with people.

The park's wetlands and acacia country are superb for wildlife viewing and photography. The elephants spend the heat of the day in the green swamps, drinking and bathing, while buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and a wealth of birds share the water with them. The middle of the day can be spent back at the lodge, with a second drive when the light softens.

Amboseli to Lake Manyara

Amboseli to Lake Manyara

The safari crosses into Tanzania at the Namanga border, where the formalities are handled for the party, and continues south toward Arusha and then west into the Rift Valley. The landscape changes as it goes, from open plains to farmland, and finally to the lush groundwater forest of Lake Manyara, lying at the foot of a towering escarpment.

An afternoon game drive explores the park, where baboons, elephants and giraffe move between the forest and the lake shore. The night is at Escarpment Luxury Lodge Manyara, set high on the escarpment above the park, with views across the lake.

Lake Manyara to Ngorongoro

Lake Manyara to Ngorongoro

The road climbs from Manyara up into the Ngorongoro Highlands, through farms and coffee country and then into cool, misty forest. The air changes, the temperature drops, and the dramatic volcanic scenery of the highlands takes over from the lowland plains.

The night is at Ngorongoro Lion's Paw Camp, on the rim of the crater, and the arrival leaves plenty of time to take in the view: a vast caldera, its floor far below, with the animals on it just visible as specks. The evening is cool enough to be glad of a fire.

06

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater

The descent into the crater starts early, the road winding down the steep wall onto a floor that holds one of the densest concentrations of wildlife on earth. This is one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five in a single outing: rhino, lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard can all be found here, alongside great herds of zebra and wildebeest, hippo in the pools and flamingos on the soda lake.

Lunch is a picnic on the crater floor, surrounded by the caldera walls. In the afternoon the road climbs back up to the rim, and the night is at Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge, built into the crater wall.

Ngorongoro to the Serengeti

Ngorongoro to Serengeti

Leaving the highlands, the road drops west and the land flattens into the Serengeti's endless grassland. Plains game is often visible from the vehicle well before the park boundary, gazelle and zebra scattered across the open ground, and the sense of scale grows with every kilometre.

Arrival at Enkirari Wilderness Camp, a luxury tented camp in the Central Serengeti, is in time for an afternoon game drive in country rich in predators. After the enclosed world of the crater, the size of the Serengeti comes as a revelation.

Central Serengeti National Park

Full day in the Serengeti

The Serengeti is explored at an easy pace, with the day left open to follow the wildlife wherever it is. The migration moves through the park across the year, and the guide keeps track of where the herds are, so the day can be built around them when they are within reach.

Otherwise, the Central Serengeti's resident lions, leopards and cheetah give plenty to fill the hours. There is time for photography, for staying with a good sighting until it plays out, and for simply taking in the sheer size of the plains.

Serengeti to the Maasai Mara

Serengeti to Maasai Mara

The day starts early, crossing back over the border into Kenya and heading for the Maasai Mara. It is a long drive, but the reward is arrival in one of Africa's most celebrated wildlife reserves, the northern end of the same great ecosystem as the Serengeti.

The night is at Mara Intrepids Camp, a luxury tented camp inside the reserve, and the day ends with a late afternoon game drive, as the light turns gold and the animals start to move again after the heat.

Maasai Mara National Reserve

Full day in the Maasai Mara

Morning and afternoon game drives cover the Mara's golden plains, where lion, cheetah, elephant and leopard are all regularly seen. The morning drive catches the predators while they are still active, and the afternoon drive brings the best light for photography.

For anyone who wants to see the Mara from the air, an optional sunrise hot air balloon safari drifts silently over the grass as the herds wake below, and lands for breakfast out on the plains.

Maasai Mara National Reserve

Another day in the Maasai Mara

A second full day on the Mara allows deeper exploration without any rush. The guide can head for different parts of the reserve, follow up on the best sightings of the previous day, or simply find a quiet spot to watch the plains.

As the light changes through the day, the savannah changes with it, from the soft greys of early morning to the deep gold of evening. Before the return to camp there is the chance of a sundowner, a cold drink out on the plains as the sun sets.

Maasai Mara to Lake Nakuru

The road runs north east out of the Mara, crossing the Great Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru, a park renowned for rhino conservation and for its birdlife. The night is at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge, overlooking the lake.

The afternoon game drive concentrates on what Nakuru does best: its black and white rhino, protected inside the park's fence, and the Rothschild's giraffe, one of the rarest giraffe subspecies, which browse the acacia woodland. Buffalo, waterbuck and flocks of pelicans complete the picture.

Our family had an absolutely incredible experience with Volcan Tours and Travel during our trip to Africa. Traveling with two young children (a 2 year old and a 6 year old) can sometimes be challenging, but thanks to their excellent organization and attention to detail everything went smoothly from beginning to end. The entire trip was perfectly planned from the beautiful accommodations to the unforgettable safari experiences. Seeing the wildlife up close was truly magical and everything was arranged in a way that made it comfortable and enjoyable for our whole family. A special mention to the amazing guides and drivers who were professional, friendly and wonderful with our children. They made us feel safe and welcome at all times and helped create memories that our family will cherish forever. We are so grateful to the Volcan Tours and Travel team for organizing such a unique and unforgettable journey. We highly recommend them to anyone planning a trip to Africa, especially families traveling with young children!

I had an unforgettable safari visiting Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, and Amboseli, and everything was simply perfect from start to finish. The organization, the lodges, the guides — every detail was beyond expectations. A very special thank you to Marion, who was incredibly kind, helpful, and always available. She took care of every detail, answered all my questions, and made sure everything went smoothly throughout the trip. Her dedication and warm attitude truly made the experience even better. I couldn’t have asked for a better safari — the wildlife, landscapes, and people were amazing. I highly recommend this agency and would definitely book with them again.

Without doubt one of the favourite game park in Kenya(Amboseli Game Park) Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by Volcan Tour Guide Marion, our names were mentioned on the board and we felt welcomed and with such a friendly atmosphere we had a fantastic start! The guide and tour was extremely good, very flexible and for that she deserves a special thanks. We had two great days there, which obviously also added up to the experience. Marion is such a warm personality and highly motivated guide not forgetting -recommendable!. We truly enjoyed walking the six of us through the area. The scenery was beautiful and it was a relieve to walk in such a quiet and peaceful environment. The beautiful animals at the park carried our adventure. The atmosphere is so special that it really felt like home to all of us. All respect for Marion who did a great job there; a true sample of excellent tour guide! Many thanks again and I recommend Volcan Tour Guide Marion to everyone! Welcome to the great nation of Kenya: HAKUNA MATATA!

Before you book

Questions, answered

What travellers ask us most about a safari like this one. Anything else, ask below and a specialist in Nairobi replies within one business day.

Is this a private safari?

Yes. This safari is private: your own vehicle and guide for the whole trip, and we never merge your party with another to cut costs.

How do we book, and how much is the deposit?

Press Book this safari. You can hold your dates for three days without paying while a specialist checks availability with the lodges and parks, or pay a deposit of 30, 40 or 50 percent, or the full amount, by credit or debit card through Pesapal. You can also pay by bank transfer, or in person at our Nairobi office by card. The standard schedule is a 30 percent deposit to confirm and the balance 60 days before arrival; bookings made within 60 days of departure, and gorilla or chimpanzee permits, are paid in full at booking. Card details go to Pesapal, never to Volcan.

Will we see the Great Migration and a river crossing?

The herds usually reach the Maasai Mara around July and stay until about October, crossing the Mara River many times in that period. For the rest of the year they are in the Serengeti in Tanzania. The timing is set by the rains, so no operator can promise a crossing on a given day, but our guides follow the reports every morning and position you as well as experience allows.

Do we need a visa?

Kenya: most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), applied for online before travel at etakenya.go.ke. Tanzania: visas are issued online through the official immigration portal, visa.immigration.go.tz, and on arrival at some entry points. Rules depend on your passport and change from time to time, so check them before you book flights, and always apply through the official government portal, never a third-party agent. We tell you what applies to your route when we confirm your trip.

Which vaccinations and health precautions do we need?

See a travel clinic at least six weeks before you go. Malaria is present in most safari areas of East Africa, so ask about antimalarials, insect repellent and cover-up clothing for the evenings. A yellow fever certificate can be required depending on your route and where you arrive from. Tanzania can ask for one from travellers arriving from Kenya, which matters on a route that crosses between the two.

What vehicle will we travel in?

A Toyota Land Cruiser from Volcan’s own fleet, in the company’s colours, with the same driver-guide from the first day to the last. It is yours alone for the whole safari, and every vehicle carries reusable water bottles.

Can children come on this safari?

Yes, and a private vehicle makes it easy to set the pace around them. Child rates depend on the lodges, and some camps and activities set minimum ages, so tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we confirm what applies before you pay anything.

What happens if we need to cancel?

Tell us in writing as early as possible. The cancellation charges for your trip are set out in your written booking confirmation. Gorilla permits, internal flights and non-refundable lodge deposits already paid on your behalf cannot be recovered, so they are charged in full. Refunds go back to the card or account the payment came from. The detail is in our Booking & Payment Terms.
