19-Day East Africa Grand Safari
Seven parks across two countries in one continuous private safari, the most comprehensive itinerary Volcan runs.
A private grand tour through Amboseli, Samburu and the Maasai Mara in Kenya, then across into Tanzania for the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and finally Selous Game Reserve in the south.
This is built for travellers who have the time and want the full breadth of East African safari country in a single trip, rather than choosing between countries.

Nairobi
Arrival in Nairobi
A private transfer meets the flight into Nairobi and continues to a lodge overlooking Nairobi National Park, where the city feels far away and the calls of the bush arrive before the safari has even begun.
The rest of the evening is free, to rest and to watch the light fade over the park.

Nairobi to Amboseli
Nairobi to Amboseli
A short flight from Wilson Airport heads south to Amboseli, and on a clear morning Kilimanjaro appears out of the window long before the airstrip does. The transfer to camp is a game drive in itself, and lunch follows on arrival.
In the afternoon the first game drive heads out among the elephant herds as they make their way toward the swamps, with the mountain rising behind them.

Amboseli
Full Day in Amboseli
Amboseli's swamps are the heart of the park, fed from underground by water running off Kilimanjaro, and the full day is timed around them. The elephants arrive in the morning, walking in from the dry woodland in long lines, and spend the heat of the day drinking, bathing and feeding in the green water.
Drives run in the morning and afternoon, with buffalo, hippo, zebra and a great variety of birds around the swamps, and Kilimanjaro as the backdrop whenever the cloud lifts.

Amboseli to Samburu
Amboseli to Samburu
The flight connects through Wilson Airport and carries on north to Samburu, and the landscape changes completely: from Kilimanjaro's plains to the dry red country and doum palms of the north, cut through by the green line of the Ewaso Ng'iro River.
Lunch is taken on arrival, and the first game drive follows along the river, where elephant come down to drink in the afternoon.

Samburu
Full Day in Samburu
Samburu's wildlife is its own, and the full day is spent finding it: the Grevy's zebra, with its fine stripes, the reticulated giraffe, the gerenuk, which stands on its hind legs to feed, the beisa oryx and the Somali ostrich.
Elephant, lion and leopard use the river too, and the drives follow them in the cooler hours of the morning and late afternoon, with the heat of the day spent at camp.

Samburu to the Maasai Mara
Samburu to the Maasai Mara
A flight south crosses the equator and the Rift Valley, trading Samburu's dry country for the long grass of the Maasai Mara, and the difference is obvious from the air. Lunch is at camp, and the first game drive follows in the afternoon.
The plains around camp are home to lion, cheetah, leopard and the great herds, and even a first drive here rarely comes back without a memorable sighting.

Maasai Mara
Full Day in the Maasai Mara
The first of two full days on the reserve starts at dawn, while the cats are still active: lions returning from the night's hunt, cheetah climbing onto a termite mound to scan the grass. The afternoon drive returns to the plains as the heat fades and the light turns warm.
The Mara's lion density is among the highest in Africa, and a full day here usually brings more than one pride.

Maasai Mara

Questions, answered
What travellers ask us most about a safari like this one. Anything else, ask below and a specialist in Nairobi replies within one business day.
Can this be booked as separate shorter trips instead?
Yes. The Kenya leg, the northern Tanzania leg, and the Selous leg can each be booked on their own; several shorter Volcan itineraries already cover each in isolation.
Is this a private safari?
Yes. This safari is private: your own vehicle and guide for the whole trip, and we never merge your party with another to cut costs.
How do we book, and how much is the deposit?
Press Book this safari. You can hold your dates for three days without paying while a specialist checks availability with the lodges and parks, or pay a deposit of 30, 40 or 50 percent, or the full amount, by credit or debit card through Pesapal. You can also pay by bank transfer, or in person at our Nairobi office by card. The standard schedule is a 30 percent deposit to confirm and the balance 60 days before arrival; bookings made within 60 days of departure, and gorilla or chimpanzee permits, are paid in full at booking. Card details go to Pesapal, never to Volcan.
Will we see the Great Migration and a river crossing?
The herds usually reach the Maasai Mara around July and stay until about October, crossing the Mara River many times in that period. For the rest of the year they are in the Serengeti in Tanzania. The timing is set by the rains, so no operator can promise a crossing on a given day, but our guides follow the reports every morning and position you as well as experience allows.
Do we need a visa?
Kenya: most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), applied for online before travel at etakenya.go.ke. Tanzania: visas are issued online through the official immigration portal, visa.immigration.go.tz, and on arrival at some entry points. Rules depend on your passport and change from time to time, so check them before you book flights, and always apply through the official government portal, never a third-party agent. We tell you what applies to your route when we confirm your trip.
Which vaccinations and health precautions do we need?
See a travel clinic at least six weeks before you go. Malaria is present in most safari areas of East Africa, so ask about antimalarials, insect repellent and cover-up clothing for the evenings. A yellow fever certificate can be required depending on your route and where you arrive from. Tanzania can ask for one from travellers arriving from Kenya, which matters on a route that crosses between the two.
What vehicle will we travel in?
A Toyota Land Cruiser from Volcan’s own fleet, in the company’s colours, with the same driver-guide from the first day to the last. It is yours alone for the whole safari, and every vehicle carries reusable water bottles.
Can children come on this safari?
Yes, and a private vehicle makes it easy to set the pace around them. Child rates depend on the lodges, and some camps and activities set minimum ages, so tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we confirm what applies before you pay anything.
