A refined seven-day private safari through Tanzania’s defining wildlife destinations, with three immersive nights in the Serengeti. From Tarangire’s ancient baobabs and elephant country to the endless plains of the Serengeti, the volcanic wilderness of Ngorongoro and the bird-rich landscape of Lake Manyara, the route covers a wide variety of scenery and wildlife at a comfortable luxury standard.
The safari travels in a pop-up-roof 4×4 throughout, with airport transfers included at both ends.
Departures run on any day subject to availability, and the trip is not available to solo travellers, accepting children from age three. Rates are fixed by party size; see the schedule below.

Arusha
Arrival in Arusha
A safari representative is waiting at the airport, and the transfer runs to Kahawa House, a luxury lodge in Arusha. The town sits in the foothills of Mount Meru, among coffee farms and streets lined with jacaranda, and it is the staging point for the whole northern circuit.
The first evening is built around settling in, easily and without hurry, before the game drives begin.

Kahawa House is a boutique lodge in Arusha, the gateway town for safaris in northern Tanzania. It is set among gardens and coffee plantations that give it a greener, quieter atmosphere than the busy town around it. That makes it a restful place to spend a night on arrival before setting off for Tarangire, Lake […]
Arusha to Tarangire
Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Tarangire National Park is around two and a half hours from Arusha on good tarmac, and the drive runs through Maasai country, red earth, cattle and roadside markets. The park itself is a landscape of ancient baobabs and the winding Tarangire River, where large elephant families gather through the dry season.
Giraffe, bushbuck, hartebeest, lion, leopard and a great abundance of birds share the river country. Lunch is served at a picnic site inside the park, and then the road climbs to Karatu, and the night at Ngorongoro Marera Mountain View Lodge.

Karatu to the Serengeti
Karatu to the Serengeti
Cool, green highlands come first, as the road climbs through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with a pause at the rim for the first view down into the crater. Then it drops west, onto the Serengeti's southern plains, where the grass runs flat and open to the horizon.
The Serengeti is famous for its wildlife and for the annual Great Migration, and the camp may move with the seasons to stay close to the herds. The night is at Nyota Serengeti Camp, a luxury tented camp inside the park.

Serengeti National Park
Full-day Serengeti safari
A day given entirely to game drives across the Serengeti, a landscape holding an extraordinary concentration of wildlife: impala and buffalo, crocodile and hippo in the rivers, and a strong population of predators, lion, leopard and cheetah among them.
Depending on where the migration is in its yearly circuit, the route may push beyond the Central Serengeti to follow the herds.

Serengeti National Park
Another day in the Serengeti
The rhythm eases on the second day, with drives early in the morning and late in the afternoon, timed around the hours when lion and cheetah are most often on the move. The middle of the day is spent back at camp, for lunch and a rest in the shade.
The granite kopjes and open grassland are covered at a slower pace, and there is time to sit with a sighting rather than move on.

Serengeti to Ngorongoro
Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater
One last Serengeti sunrise, and then the road east toward Ngorongoro. The crater is entered for an afternoon game drive across its savannah, acacia woodland, lake and wetland, with good odds for wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, buffalo and lion, and the endangered black rhino a real possibility.
The drive then continues to Karatu for the night. Meals on this day are at own expense.

Ngorongoro to Lake Manyara to Arusha
Lake Manyara and return to Arusha
Lake Manyara National Park is compact but remarkably varied, and it hosts the last game drive of the safari: the wall of the Rift Valley escarpment, a seasonal soda lake, evergreen groundwater forest and a wealth of birdlife. Elephant, giraffe, buffalo, hippo and the park's famous tree climbing lions are all possible.
A picnic lunch is taken inside the park, and the safari ends with drop-off in Arusha, at Kilimanjaro Airport or at Arusha Airport.

Questions, answered
What travellers ask us most about a safari like this one. Anything else, ask below and a specialist in Nairobi replies within one business day.
Is this a private safari?
Yes. This safari is private: your own vehicle and guide for the whole trip, and we never merge your party with another to cut costs.
How do we book, and how much is the deposit?
Press Book this safari. You can hold your dates for three days without paying while a specialist checks availability with the lodges and parks, or pay a deposit of 30, 40 or 50 percent, or the full amount, by credit or debit card through Pesapal. You can also pay by bank transfer, or in person at our Nairobi office by card. The standard schedule is a 30 percent deposit to confirm and the balance 60 days before arrival; bookings made within 60 days of departure, and gorilla or chimpanzee permits, are paid in full at booking. Card details go to Pesapal, never to Volcan.
Will we see the Great Migration and a river crossing?
The herds usually reach the Maasai Mara around July and stay until about October, crossing the Mara River many times in that period. For the rest of the year they are in the Serengeti in Tanzania. The timing is set by the rains, so no operator can promise a crossing on a given day, but our guides follow the reports every morning and position you as well as experience allows.
Do we need a visa?
Tanzania: visas are issued online through the official immigration portal, visa.immigration.go.tz, and on arrival at some entry points. Rules depend on your passport and change from time to time, so check them before you book flights, and always apply through the official government portal, never a third-party agent. We tell you what applies to your route when we confirm your trip.
Which vaccinations and health precautions do we need?
See a travel clinic at least six weeks before you go. Malaria is present in most safari areas of East Africa, so ask about antimalarials, insect repellent and cover-up clothing for the evenings. A yellow fever certificate can be required depending on your route and where you arrive from.
What vehicle will we travel in?
A Toyota Land Cruiser from Volcan’s own fleet, in the company’s colours, with the same driver-guide from the first day to the last. It is yours alone for the whole safari, and every vehicle carries reusable water bottles.
Can children come on this safari?
Yes, and a private vehicle makes it easy to set the pace around them. Child rates depend on the lodges, and some camps and activities set minimum ages, so tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we confirm what applies before you pay anything.
What happens if we need to cancel?
Tell us in writing as early as possible. The cancellation charges for your trip are set out in your written booking confirmation. Gorilla permits, internal flights and non-refundable lodge deposits already paid on your behalf cannot be recovered, so they are charged in full. Refunds go back to the card or account the payment came from. The detail is in our Booking & Payment Terms.
