13-Day Kenya, Tanzania & Zanzibar Safari
Lake Nakuru and the Maasai Mara, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara, finishing with a Zanzibar beach escape.
A refined private journey across Kenya and Tanzania, ending with a tranquil Zanzibar escape. The itinerary brings together Lake Nakuru and the Maasai Mara, the wildlife-rich Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara, before time to unwind on the beaches of Zanzibar.
The first five days cover Kenya, from Lake Nakuru to the Maasai Mara, then the route continues into Tanzania for the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara before flying onward to Zanzibar. The crossing from the Maasai Mara to the Serengeti is made through the Isebania border, and the itinerary can also be operated in the opposite direction, beginning in Arusha.
For travellers who prefer to finish in Kenya, an alternative is available at the end of the safari: transfer to Amboseli for one or two nights and conclude the journey in Nairobi.

Nairobi to Lake Nakuru
Nairobi to Lake Nakuru
The journey leaves Nairobi and drops over the escarpment onto the floor of the Great Rift Valley, reaching Lake Nakuru National Park in time for an afternoon game drive around the soda lake.
Nakuru is best known as a rhino sanctuary, with black and white rhino both living inside its fence, and it does not disappoint: flamingos and pelicans crowd the shoreline, and Rothschild's giraffe browse in the acacia woodland. The night is at Lake Nakuru Lodge.

Lake Nakuru to the Maasai Mara
Lake Nakuru to Maasai Mara
From Nakuru the road climbs out of the highland farmland and runs south west, down onto the Mara's open grassland, arriving at Basecamp Masai Mara, a tented camp inside the reserve, in time for lunch and a first game drive.
Wide plains and scattered acacia give the Mara its famously clear views, and the odds are good for lion, as well as the resident herds of topi, zebra and wildebeest that hold the plains for most of the year.

Maasai Mara National Reserve
Maasai Mara
Morning and afternoon game drives range across the reserve's different habitats. Along the Mara and Talek rivers, the riverine forest is where leopard are sometimes found resting in the shade, and hippos and crocodiles fill the pools. On the open plains, cheetah hunt in daylight when the grass is short.
The day ends with sundowners out on the savannah, a cold drink as the sun sets over the plains, before the return to camp.

Maasai Mara
A third day on the Mara gives time to follow up on what the reserve has already shown: a return to a pride with cubs, a river crossing when the migrating herds are in the area, or new ground along the escarpment to the west.
It is the extra day that turns a quick pass through the Mara into real time with it, and it is often the day the best sightings happen.

Maasai Mara to the Serengeti
Maasai Mara to Serengeti
One last morning game drive on the Mara, and then the drive south to the Isebania border, where the crossing into Tanzania is made on foot between the two countries' posts. On the other side, the same great ecosystem carries on under a different name and a different flag.
The road continues into the Serengeti, with time for a first game drive on arrival, before dinner at Enkirari Wilderness Camp.

Central Serengeti National Park
Serengeti
Game drives cover the Central Serengeti's open plains and kopjes, the granite outcrops that give lion and cheetah a natural lookout over the grass. The sightings often gather around the seasonal water, and the guide weighs up the morning's reports from other vehicles before deciding which way to go.
The sheer scale of the plains takes a while to sink in.

Central Serengeti National Park
Serengeti
The third day in the Serengeti lets the game drives range further, timed where possible to the migration, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra move across the plains in a single, near endless column.
Outside the migration season, the focus turns to the park's resident predators and its permanent rivers, where leopards rest in the trees and lions lie in wait for the herds that come to drink.

Serengeti to Ngorongoro
Serengeti to Ngorongoro
The road leaves the Serengeti and climbs east into the Ngorongoro highlands, a belt of cloud forest wrapped around the rim of the crater. The air cools, the grass gives way to trees, and the views open out.
Ngorongoro Kuhama Camp sits close to the rim, and the first view down into the caldera comes on arrival. The descent onto the crater floor is saved for the morning.

Ngorongoro to Lake Manyara
Ngorongoro to Lake Manyara
An early descent onto the crater floor begins the morning's game drive, across grassland, swamp and soda lake enclosed by the steep walls, with good odds for lion, elephant, buffalo and hippo, and black rhino sometimes seen out in the open.
The climb back out is followed by the drive to Lake Manyara and Nasikia Mandhari Lodge, on the escarpment above a park known for its tree climbing lions and the flamingos on the lake below.

Lake Manyara to Zanzibar
A short flight carries the safari off the mainland and out over the Indian Ocean to Zanzibar, the savannah giving way to turquoise water and white sand within the hour.
Nungwi sits at the island's northern tip, a former fishing village now known for its calm, reef protected water. The rest of the day is free to settle into Nungwi Dreams by Mantis, with the beach and the pool both close at hand before dinner.

Zanzibar
No game drives and no schedule: just Nungwi's white sand and calm water. Snorkelling over the reef just offshore, a dhow sail along the coast at sunset, or a spice tour and the old streets of Stone Town are all easy half day options for a change from the beach.
Or the day can be spent doing nothing at all, which after a week on safari is a perfectly good plan.

Questions, answered
What travellers ask us most about a safari like this one. Anything else, ask below and a specialist in Nairobi replies within one business day.
Is this a private safari?
Yes. This safari is private: your own vehicle and guide for the whole trip, and we never merge your party with another to cut costs.
How do we book, and how much is the deposit?
Press Book this safari. You can hold your dates for three days without paying while a specialist checks availability with the lodges and parks, or pay a deposit of 30, 40 or 50 percent, or the full amount, by credit or debit card through Pesapal. You can also pay by bank transfer, or in person at our Nairobi office by card. The standard schedule is a 30 percent deposit to confirm and the balance 60 days before arrival; bookings made within 60 days of departure, and gorilla or chimpanzee permits, are paid in full at booking. Card details go to Pesapal, never to Volcan.
Will we see the Great Migration and a river crossing?
The herds usually reach the Maasai Mara around July and stay until about October, crossing the Mara River many times in that period. For the rest of the year they are in the Serengeti in Tanzania. The timing is set by the rains, so no operator can promise a crossing on a given day, but our guides follow the reports every morning and position you as well as experience allows.
Do we need a visa?
Kenya: most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), applied for online before travel at etakenya.go.ke. Tanzania: visas are issued online through the official immigration portal, visa.immigration.go.tz, and on arrival at some entry points. Rules depend on your passport and change from time to time, so check them before you book flights, and always apply through the official government portal, never a third-party agent. We tell you what applies to your route when we confirm your trip.
Which vaccinations and health precautions do we need?
See a travel clinic at least six weeks before you go. Malaria is present in most safari areas of East Africa, so ask about antimalarials, insect repellent and cover-up clothing for the evenings. A yellow fever certificate can be required depending on your route and where you arrive from. Tanzania can ask for one from travellers arriving from Kenya, which matters on a route that crosses between the two.
What vehicle will we travel in?
A Toyota Land Cruiser from Volcan’s own fleet, in the company’s colours, with the same driver-guide from the first day to the last. It is yours alone for the whole safari, and every vehicle carries reusable water bottles.
Can children come on this safari?
Yes, and a private vehicle makes it easy to set the pace around them. Child rates depend on the lodges, and some camps and activities set minimum ages, so tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we confirm what applies before you pay anything.
What happens if we need to cancel?
Tell us in writing as early as possible. The cancellation charges for your trip are set out in your written booking confirmation. Gorilla permits, internal flights and non-refundable lodge deposits already paid on your behalf cannot be recovered, so they are charged in full. Refunds go back to the card or account the payment came from. The detail is in our Booking & Payment Terms.
