What To Expect

DAY 1: Kigali to Nyungwe National Park

  • Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be greeted by the Akagera Aviation Team and the Primate Safaris team for a brief on your upcoming safari.
  • Depart for Nyungwe National Park with a scenic 8-hour drive via Butare, Rwanda’s second-largest city. En route, visit the Kings Palace in Nyanza District and the Butare National Museum, known for its exceptional ethnographic collection.
  • Enjoy lunch at Ibis Hotel in Butare. Continue to the lodge for check-in, dinner, and overnight.Accommodation: One & Only Nyungwe House – Full Board (FB)

DAY 2: Nyungwe Forest – Chimpanzee Trek and Canopy Walk

  • Start with an early breakfast at the lodge. Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park headquarters at 4:30 AM. At 5:00 AM, begin your chimpanzee trek in the dense forest, home to a significant population of chimpanzees. This trek also offers the chance to see other primates.
  • Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, embark on the exhilarating Canopy Walk, a 160-meter long, 70-meter high suspended bridge offering stunning views of Nyungwe Forest. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.Accommodation: One & Only Nyungwe House – Full Board (FB)

DAY 3: Nyungwe Forest – Colobus Monkey Trek

  • Enjoy an early breakfast at the lodge before transferring to Nyungwe Forest National Park headquarters at 4:30 AM. At 5:00 AM, hike into the forest to observe the Black and White Angolan Colobus Monkeys, known as Ruwenzori colobus monkeys. This park hosts the largest troop of Colobus monkeys in Africa.
  • Return to the lodge for lunch, then drive 4 hours to the picturesque shores of Lake Kivu, arriving in Gisenyi for check-in, dinner, and overnight.Accommodation: Lake Kivu Serena Hotel – Full Board (FB)

DAY 4: Gisenyi to Volcanoes National Park

  • After a leisurely breakfast and lunch at the lodge, drive to the northern end of Lake Kivu and then to Kinigi, a 1-hour drive. Check-in at One & Only Gorilla’s Nest for dinner and overnight.Accommodation: One & Only Gorilla’s Nest – Full Board (FB)

DAY 5: Volcanoes National Park – Gorilla Trekking

  • Enjoy an early breakfast at the lodge before transferring to Volcanoes National Park Headquarters at 6:00 AM for registration and briefing on gorilla trekking. The trek may take between 2 to 6 hours, and you will have one hour to view and photograph the mountain gorillas.
  • Return to the lodge for lunch, then drive back to Kigali City for an overnight stay.Accommodation: Kigali Serena Hotel – Bed & Breakfast (BB)

DAY 6: Departure

  • Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before transferring to Kigali International Airport for your international departure.
