What To Expect

DAY 1: Kigali to Nyungwe National Park

  • Meet and greet at Kigali International Airport by the Akagera Aviation Team, followed by a briefing from the Primate Safaris team. Embark on an 8-hour drive to Nyungwe National Park via Butare, Rwanda’s second-largest city.
  • Visit the Kings Palace in Nyanza District, the seat of the feudal monarchy, and the Butare National Museum, which houses the finest ethnographic collection in East Africa.
  • Enjoy lunch at Ibis Hotel in Butare. Continue to Nyungwe for check-in, dinner, and overnight.Accommodation: One & Only Nyungwe House – Full Board (FB)

DAY 2: Nyungwe Forest – Chimpanzee Trek and Canopy Walk

  • After an early breakfast at the lodge, transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park headquarters by 4:30 AM. Start the chimpanzee trek at 5:00 AM through the forest, home to a large population of chimpanzees and other primates.
  • Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, experience the Canopy Walk, a thrilling 160-meter walkway suspended 70 meters above the forest floor, offering breathtaking views.
  • Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.Accommodation: One & Only Nyungwe House – Full Board (FB)

DAY 3: Nyungwe Forest – Colobus Monkey Trek

  • Enjoy an early breakfast at the lodge before transferring to Nyungwe Forest National Park headquarters at 4:30 AM. Trek to see the Black and White Angolan Colobus Monkeys, also known as Ruwenzori colobus monkeys.
  • After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch, then drive to the scenic shores of Lake Kivu. Arrive in Gisenyi for check-in, dinner, and overnight.Accommodation: Lake Kivu Serena Hotel – Full Board (FB)

DAY 4: Gisenyi to Volcanoes National Park

  • After a leisurely breakfast and lunch at the lodge, drive to the northern end of Lake Kivu and then to Kinigi, which is approximately a 1-hour drive.
  • Check-in at One & Only Gorilla’s Nest for dinner and overnight.Accommodation: Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge – Full Board (FB)

DAY 5: Volcanoes National Park – Gorilla Trekking

  • After an early breakfast at the lodge, transfer to Volcanoes National Park Headquarters by 6:00 AM for registration and briefing on gorilla trekking.
  • Trekking may take between 2 to 6 hours, with a one-hour period allocated for viewing and photographing the mountain gorillas.
  • Return to the lodge to freshen up and have lunch. In the afternoon, drive back to Kigali City for an overnight stay.Accommodation: Kigali Serena Hotel – Bed & Breakfast (BB)

DAY 6: Departure

  • Enjoy breakfast at your hotel. Transfer to Kigali International Airport for your international departure.
